Grilling steak perfectly doesn’t require the services of a chef. You can also make that perfect piece of meat with the knowledge and a bit of practice. The following is a guide on how to grill like a pro. Instructions If the steak has been stored in the fridge, let it warm up to room temperature. Get rid of all the fat until only ¼” of it remains. Wash the meat in water. Add some seasonings. You can use garlic powder, onion and other seasonings. Preheat the grill. If you’re using gas grills, set it to high. If you’re using charcoals, put a layer of white coals. Add some oil on the grate. Put the steak on the grill. Shut the lid for 1 minute. Open the lid and flip the steak over. Close it. Cook for another minute. Continue grilling steak by opening the lid and turning the steak over. Cook it for 2 minutes. Add another minute for every ½ inch (i.e. 1 ½ inch streak should be cooked for 5 minutes). Flip it over and cook for 2 minutes. Add 1 minute for every ½ inch. When it’s cooked let it rest for 5 minutes prior to serving. Steak Doneness Levels Use a digital meat thermometer to determine the doneness level of the steak. For well done the internal temp should read 170 degrees F or 77 C or higher. For medium, wait for the internal temp to reach 140 to 150 degrees F or 60 to 65 degrees C. For medium rare, wait for the thermometer to read 130 to 135 degrees F or 55 to 57 degrees C. If you’re grilling steak rare, the internal temperature should be 120 to 130 degrees F or 50 to 55 degrees C. Tips on Using the Grill Use the tongs to grab some streak fat. Rub this over the grate. A two burner gas grill will be sufficient for most cooking tasks. Side burners are a nice addition but they are not mandatory. To make cleaning easier, get models that don’t use see through glass windows. Seasonings Aside from the seasonings mentioned earlier, you can also apply some kosher salt prior to grilling. A popular combination is to sprinkle some salt and vegetable oil. Some pepper is then sprayed on the meat. Others like to put on some unsalted butter. Other Grilling Steak Tips If you don’t have a meat thermometer, assess the steak’s color to determine its doneness. For medium steaks, the center section will have a brownish hue. The upper and bottom sections will be dark. The edges will also be brown. To check for doneness, press the meat; it should be a bit firm. The signs of an undercooked meat are reddish colors and way too much juice. It is overcooked if the steak appears pink with no gloss. The meat thickness may affect the cooking time. Never serve the steaks without resting them. It robs the meat of its flavors. Investing in a meat thermometer is highly recommended. If you’re cooking for people with varying tastes, the thermometer will take out a lot of the guesswork. Not only is grilling steak simple but it also leaves room for personal flavorings and experimentation. Once you’ve tried the basic techniques, you can try out various seasonings and spices to perfect your skill.
